The region & surrounding area
The Wörthersee is located in the middle of the beautiful state of Kärnten (Carinthia). On the south bank of the lake is the small and very peaceful locality of Maria Wörth, with its two very old pilgrimage churches on the idyllic peninsula. Our village is particularly suited to the holidaymaker looking for some peace and quiet.
You can get to the state capital, Klagenfurt, 15 kilometres away on the eastern side of the lake by bus, boat, bicycle or car, or Velden to the west with its famous castle hotel.
The wonderful Wörthersee landscape is the backdrop every year for Ironman Austria, attracting thousands of sports enthusiasts to Carinthia. Those with a keen interest in culture can treat themselves to the programme offered by the Burgarena Finkenstein , or indulge in the Carinthischer Sommer (Carinthian Summer festival), while lovers of the Carinthian scenery can enjoy the Wörthersee panorama from the observation tower, the Pyramidenkogel.
Maria Wörth is a central point of departure for countless excursions and activities throughout Carinthia; and you can quickly get to our neighbouring countries, Slovenia and Italy.
Maria Wörth is located directly on a very old line of force, stretching from the Großglockner in the west, right across our state. The little Winterkirche (Winter Church) was built on this line of force a long time ago.
